Mary Pitts Harrold

Stokes County, North Carolina was formed in 1789 from Surry County.

The Society of Friends (Quakers) began in England in the 1650s, when they broke away from the Puritans. Pennsylvania was founded by William Penn, as a safe place for Friends to live and practice their faith.

Mary Pitts was born about 1749 in Frederick County, Virginia which is now Berkeley County West Virginia. Her parents were Andrew Pitts and Martha Stroud.

When she was a child she moved to a part of Rowan County, North Carolina that became Stokes County in 1789.

She married Richard Harrold on  April 28, 1770 at the New Garden Monthly Meeting. Richard was born about 1746 in Frederick County, Virginia. His parents were Jonathan Harrold and Catherine Hiatt.

In March, 1792 Richard was granted a certificate to the Westfield Monthly Meeting in Surry County, North Carolina.

In March 1793 Richard was granted a certificate to the Deep River Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina

In September, 1796 Elijah, Richard, Jacob, Jesse, Nathan and Levi were received on certificate from Westfield Monthly Meeting in Surry County, North Carolina.

In July 1799 Richard and Mary were granted a certificate to the Westfield Monthly Meeting in Surry County.

In August, 1799 Richard and his sons Jacob, John, Jesse, Nathan and Levi were received on certificate from Deep River.

In June, 1803 Richard and his family were granted a certificate to the Deep River Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina.

In August, 1803 Richard and Mary and their children Richard, Jacob, John, Jesse, Nathan, Levi, and Elizabeth were received on certificate from Westfield Monthly Meeting in Surry County.


Rowan County, North Carolina was formed in 1753 from the northern part of Anson County. In 1770, the eastern part was combined with the western part of Orange County to become Guilford County. In 1771 the northeastern part of what remained of Rowan County became Surry County. In 1777 the western part of Rowan County became Burke County. In 1788 the western part became Iredell County. In 1822 the eastern part became Davidson County. Finally, in 1836 the part of Rowan County north of the South Yadkin River became Davie County.

Guilford County, North Carolina was organized in 1771 from parts of Rowan and Orange Counties.
